The funicular on the first section to Grütschalp climbs 685 metres over a distance of 1421 metres. The two carriages each carry up to 80 passengers and travel at a speed of about 10 km/hr.
The Lauterbrunnen-Mürren Mountain Railway was opened in 1891 and is divided into two sections.

The railway system changes at Grütschalp station, altitude 1481 metres. From
here an adhesion railway travels through unspoilt Alpine pastures along the
scenic stretch to Mürren.
This second stretch climbs another 147 metres and is served by single carriage
trains. A freight wagon can be coupled on if necessary.

Mürren is not accessible to motor traffic and so freight transport is of particular importance.

Goods transport is accomplished with containers which are transferred from the funicular to the adhesion railway freight wagon at Grütschalp station using the latest transport technology.
